Peeler cores and round posts: What’s the difference? - Renovation Warehouse

Peeler cores

Affordable, solid and simple, the peeler core is the centre of a log left over after its softer wood has been taken. Typically they’re the leftover portion after plywood has been shaved off.  When rated to H4 durability, they’re perfect for withstanding the elements, but not quite at foundation durability (which needs to be H5.)

The reason peeler cores are a bit different to round fence posts is the core of the log doesn’t absorb pressure treatment as well as softwood. Still, the price is right – you’re looking at a product which is cheap, comes in a good bulk lot and won’t leave you out of pocket if you’re only planning to use it for a short time. Many people use peeler cores for light fencing, horse and pony events, retaining walls or garden edging.  Ours are available singly or in bundles.

Typical dimensions of the peeler cores at Renovation Warehouse are 2.6m long and 95mm diameter, although we do get a few varieties in length.

Round Posts

Stronger than the H4 peeler core is the round post. These have an H4 or H5 durability rating and are usually 1.8-3m long. A round post may look very slightly rough in its consistency. Because these posts have been chemically pressure-treated to help prevent rot and decay, they usually have a greenish hue.

Whichever option you choose, be sure to check out what’s available at Renovation Warehouse. We are always buying up great end of line rounds and peeler cores to pass the savings onto you, and if you need to know what lengths we have out front today, just give us a ring on 0800 274 438.
